Community Alert - Correction

False Claims. Recently 2 ads were published falsely claiming that Irondequoit Citizens for Better Government is a charity. Irondequoit Citizens for Better Government Inc. is not a charity. The law requiring freedom of information does not apply to Irondequoit Citizens for Better Government since it is not a charity. Irondequoit Citizens for Better Government is registered with the Bureau of Charities since article 7-A of New York Executive Law "requires registration of charitable & other non-profit organizations that solicit contributions." Registration alone does not indicate our organization is a charity.
Irondequoit Citizens for Better Government Inc. filed it incorporation application with the NY State Dept. of State where not for profits are required to file. The incorporation was not filed with the Charities Bureau. Our group is registered and approved as a Type A civic group. Type A also includes social, fraternal, athletic, patriotic, political, and commercial/trade or service associations.
Charities are a Type B type. We never filed as a type B which is for charities.

Our Purpose as listed in the incorporation filing which NY State accepted is to publicize the problems of local government issues and the actions of elected and appointed officials. We do not endorse candidates nor do we tell people how to vote. However even the state recognizes that not for profits can be political since it is one of the types in category A. Our Board of Directors consists of two Republicans and two Democrats who are unpaid volunteers. No one associated with our group receives a salary or payments. Our ads (over 20 of them) in the past have exposed problems with the school costs, town spending, proposed taxes and actions of public officials. Our ads have run throughout the year not just at election time. The fact that we expose issues of public concern does not define an organization as political. The League of Women Voters, a well respected non profit group, take stands on public issues yet they are not labeled a political organization.

Our Opponents - Why You Cannot Trust Them

  • They don't identify themselves. Their excuse: "messengers get killed." How many other citizens of citizen groups hide behind that ridiculous excuse?
There is no record of a citizen activist in Irondequoit who has been killed because they were a messenger on public issues.
  • They complain of attack ads yet their ads are just that-attack ads- but with misleading statements and innuendo.
  • They keep changing their names: Their first ad called them Irondequoit Citizens for Honesty with web site of pleasegetreal.org. The 2nd ad had no name but listed another web site as pleasegetalong.org. Attempts to log on to the web site proved unsuccessful.
  • Their first ad had a phone number (506-6111) which was answered by a person who did not know about the ad. The second ad had a different phone number (415-6846). The second ad also had the name of a John Laurence. The only John Laurence listed in the phone book lives in Fairport.
  • A recent search of the County and State records indicates that all 3 of the different names they use, not one of them is listed or registered with the State of New York or Monroe County. They are in fact a bogus and a sham organization with no registration and no honesty.

Anyone wising to see documentation and proof of our approval by the state of our not for profit status or who are on the board of directors can call the chairman, Richard Barone at 342-1748. It should be noted that the 4 members of the board have a total of over 40 years volunteer work in the town of Irondequoit.

Who are our opponents and what is their record of volunteering in our community?
